What is the AM-PM Difference?

The concepts AM and PM are abbreviations used in English to express two time periods of 12 hours in a 24-hour day.

AM (Ante Meridiem):

  • AM is the abbreviation of the Latin concept "Ante Meridiem" and means "before noon" in Turkish.
  • It covers the period from 00:00 to 11:59 at midnight.
  • 00:00 at midnight falls within the concept of AM.

PM (Post Meridiem):

  • PM is the abbreviation of the Latin concept "Post Meridiem" and means "afternoon" in Turkish.
  • It covers the period from 12:00 noon to 23:59 midnight.
  • 12:00 noon falls within the concept of PM.

What is AM PM?

In some countries, 12-hour time zones are used instead of the 24-hour clock system. For this reason, the concepts of “AM” and “PM” are used to clearly indicate which part of the day they are in. With these concepts, individuals; can easily separate morning, noon and evening hours.

For example, the concept of 3:00 can create confusion in the mind as to whether it is 3 in the morning or 3 in the evening. Therefore, saying 3:00 AM or 3:00 PM clearly indicates that it is morning or evening.

What Do AM and PM Mean and How Are They Used?

The abbreviations AM and PM are taken from Latin. While A.M, meaning "Ante Meridiem", means "before noon"; P.M, meaning "Post Meridiem", means "afternoon".

To summarize briefly;

"AM" for time periods between 00:00 – 12:00,


"PM" is used for the time periods between 12:00 and 00:00.

For example; While “5 pm” refers to 17:00 in the afternoon, “2 am” refers to 02:00 after midnight.

So how do we express when it is noon or 12 midnight? According to many sources, midnight is 12 am and noon is 12 pm. However, even if this is said according to the rule, it can be confusing. To avoid this, it would be safer to say "12 noon" instead of 12 noon and "12 midnight" instead of 12 midnight.
